That's exactly why I designed the Morgul Drive Deluxe.
I’ve had a dirty boost other than the VIV requested many times and it prompted me to design something different.
I find there are a LOT of “transparent” boosts and low gain overdrives out there and for the most part that is accurate but it’s also common for them to severely decrease low end to “tighten” the sound.
BLACKHAWK loves low end and having the full range of tone available so this time I’ve added external pots for gain, tone, depth (turn up to increase tightness which also increases gain).
The controls are subtle but stay perfectly in the sweet spots so finding the tone you want isn't a hassle.
The gain is from a single CA3130EZ CMOS opamp in all versions. Out of all the opamps I’ve tried, it has the best articulation, gain and compression for this circuit.
The switch is for clipping and when it’s in the middle position (LED soft clipping/no clipping/mosfet hard clipping) it’s purely volume, so yes it’s designed for all manner of driving an amp including no-clipping “clean boosting” (in the sense that a lot of guitar players call what’s actually edge of breakup “clean”)
TONE TIP:
The more I turn up the depth, the more I turn down the gain and visa versa.
Depth all the way down had the resonant frequency way down with a rat (kind of loose and fuzzy) or with Depth all the way up, it’s almost too tight and focused like a tube screamer.
I would start at noon with everything and go from there.
